Partnering for Literacy Programs
People who want to attend literacy programs may not be able to because of distance from programs, transportation costs, need for childcare or not knowing about programs. As one way to Widen Access to literacies, project staff helped community agencies offer literacy programs at agency sites. The Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association funded some of this programming.
Literacy programming was initiated at the Widening Access project office, located at The Candora Society. Candora is in a shopping mall with several other community agencies. Programming and enrolment at this site grew steadily during the Widening Access project.
Literacy programming was also offered in other community agencies. People who attended these programs were satisfied with their learning. However enrolment at these sites was lower than expected and did not increase.
Low enrolments at the smaller agencies, along with community consultations, pointed to a need for a centralized literacy program. As a result, The Learning Centre Literacy Association [www.tlcla.org] opened an ongoing literacy program at the shopping mall site.
Project staff developed a resource and wrote a report about partnering to offer programs with community agencies. You are welcome to use and adapt the resources for non-profit purposes.
